Ballet Detroit’s foremost goal is to produce well-trained, versatile dancers who can enter the professional dance world as proud representatives of the artistic talent of Detroit. The faculty have all been trained in and continue to teach the Vaganova curriculum, which has produced dancers such as Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Natalia Markarova. Intimate class sizes allow for individual and personalized attention for each dancer, multiple workshops with master teachers throughout the year provide unique training opportunities that most students only experience at summer intensive programs, and Sergey Rayevskiy is a strong advocate for his graduates to find professional opportunities as dancers throughout the world.

All students, ages 10-19, interested in the pre-professional program must audition so that Ballet Detroit’s faculty can assess them and place them in the correct level prior to enrollment. Students can audition during the annual open audition, attend a Sunday master class to audition, schedule an in-class audition, or if none of those options are possible, submit a video audition. Regardless of the method of auditioning, results will be emailed within two weeks following the audition. Please email with any questions regarding the audition process.

Students must submit two 4×6 photos (digital is acceptable) when auditioning by any method. They must be:

  • Headshot
  • First arabesque (on pointe if applicable)

Please send all digital materials for auditions to prior to auditioning. Physical photos may be presented at registration before auditioning. Please do not mail any photos.

Video auditions may only be submitted if a student is unable to audition in person by any of the above methods. Video auditions may be no longer than 10 minutes and a YouTube link to the video must be provided in the application. Please include the following:

  • Barre: Plié, Tendu, Rond de Jambe, Adagio
  • Center: Adagio, Pirouettes (en dehors & en dedans)
  • Jumps: 1 Petit Allegro, 1 Grand Allegro, 1 combination of choice
  • Pointe (if applicable): Échappé, Pirouettes (en dehors & en dedans), 1 Traveling Turns combination

After being accepted, all students must register to begin classes. Returning students who have completed the previous year’s ballet exams do not need to re-audition for the year-round program but need to register again.

After submitting the registration form, each family will receive an email containing the student handbook that includes the student contract and release forms. All Ballet Detroit parents and students must agree to the terms of the student contract outlined in the Ballet Detroit handbook and sign the release forms in order to complete the registration process.
